Prospect Of OM5 Fiber In Data Center

Multimode fiber (MMF) has experienced evolution from OM1, OM2, OM3 to OM4 since it entered the market in the 1980s. The effective bandwidth supported has been increasing and the transmission distance has become farther and farther.


Structurally, the geometry of the OM5 fiber is no different from that of the OM3 and OM4, so it is well backward compatible with these types of fibers. OM5 can also optimize short-wavelength division multiplexing, reducing the number of parallel fibers to a quarter, and using two-core fiber instead of eight-core to continuously transmit 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s, while reducing the number of fibers. OM5 fiber can greatly reduce the number of fiber cores while increasing the effective transmission distance. OM5 extends the wavelength range supported by OM3 and OM4 fibers in the horizontal direction. If we consider multimode fiber as a highway, the traditional OM1, OM2, OM3, and OM4 multimode fibers have only one channel, while the OM5 has four channels, and the transmission capacity is increased by four times. For 40G SWDM4 optical modules, OM3 fiber transmission distance is 240 meters, OM4 fiber transmission distance is 350 meters, OM5 fiber transmission distance is 440 meters; for 100G SWDM4 optical module, OM3 fiber transmission distance is 75 meters, OM4 fiber The transmission distance is 100 meters and the OM5 fiber transmission distance is 150 meters.filling gel for optical fiber cable
