According to Pamela Gidi, head of the Subtelector de Telecomunicaciones (Subtel) in Chile, Chile is willing to cooperate with other countries in building a 24,000-kilometer submarine cable system connecting South American countries and China.

In June 2017, Subtel revealed that the technical feasibility study conducted by Chinese supplier Huawei has been completed.
