Huawei and Hong Kong Telecom deploy 12th submarine cable in Africa
Huawei Ocean and PCCW Global will cooperate to build the first submarine cable between Mauritius and Rodrigues, further promoting the African Internet connection.
This will be Huawei's 12th submarine cable system deployed in Africa to address the growing demand for connectivity.
According to reports, this 700-kilometer submarine cable has a design capacity of 16 Tbps. Huawei Ocean will provide an end-to-end solution and plans to start production in 2019. By then, the system will meet the increase in bandwidth demand of Rodriguez residents and commercial enterprises in the next 25 years.
Frederick Chui, PCCW Global's senior vice president of global data sales, said that they are using their experience in designing, manufacturing and maintaining submarine cables around the world to help another service provider, Mauritius Telecom, fully debug their products.
PCCW Global has reached an agreement with Mauritius Telecom to build and maintain high-speed submarine cables connecting the Indian Ocean with the Rodrigues and Mauritius, which will greatly improve Rodriguez’s connectivity.
Huawei Marine CEO Mike Constable stated that the partnership with PCCW Global will revolutionize Rodriguez's broadband infrastructure by providing a revolution in high-speed Internet connectivity and promoting digital communications.
“This is the 12th submarine cable system we have deployed in Africa, which enhances our confidence in our technology and strong network solutions and further promotes the transformation of the digital economy in the region,” added Constable.
Located in the northeast of Mauritius, Rodrigues is a small volcanic island and currently provides local telecommunications services via satellite links.
