Deloitte claims that U.S. needs 130 to 150 billion fiber investment in the next five to seven years
Deloitte, a financial consulting firm, issued a report a few days ago that the United States needs more fiber-optic network investment to support the upcoming 5G wireless and broadband competition and strengthen network coverage in rural areas in the next five to seven years. The report estimated that the total amount of additional investment needed was between 130 billion and 150 billion US dollars. However, the report also pointed out that for the moment, there is not enough incentive to make such an investment.
Deloitte believes that telecom operators will not be able to support four times the mobile traffic increase between 2016 and 2021 without the necessary fiber optic cable deployment. At the same time, the lack of fiber access networks also hinders the deployment of high-speed services and customer choices. The report pointed out that wired broadband still accounts for more than 90% of Internet traffic. Only 38% of user households face more than two carriers that can provide more than 25Mbps bandwidth service. Users in rural areas are even less selective and often more expensive.
In contrast to the lack of funding for investment in fiber optic networks, Deloitte noted that telecom operators continue to invest in satellite television, advertising, content and advanced business models. To this end, they called for the reform of existing regulatory and investment mechanisms to support business models that can invest in fiber optic networks, including:
Supports fiber networks to undertake more services than Internet services, such as network convergence, network security, and traffic management.
Create partnerships between operators and OTT service providers. OTT service providers need high-speed broadband network support, which will attract them to invest in building fiber optic networks.
Support more fiber lease services.
The Deloitte report concludes that the United States’ efforts to increase investment in fiber optic networks will largely determine whether the United States can lead the world in more areas of innovation in the future. For this reason, the United States needs to allow more people to access broadband networks and bring them the right content at the right price.
