Hengtong's first Egyptian joint venture fiber cable plant inaugurated
The first Sino-Egyptian joint venture fiber cable plant by the Chinese cable company Hengtong Group and local Egyptian companies was completed in Cairo on Tuesday.
The plant is located in Badr City, Cairo's industrial city, and is operated by Hitek Nofal Hengtong Optix, the first Chinese-Egyptian joint venture specializing in the production of fiber optic cables and accessories.
Randa Tawfiq, marketing manager of HitekNofal, said that the new plant covers an area of33,000 square meters and is a fully automated factory using the latest technology to meet the needs of the Egyptian market for fiber optic cable in 2018.
Mohamed Nofal, CEO of HitekNOFAL Solutions, stated: "Given the government and the private sector planning to improve the communications infrastructure, Egypt's fiber cable market has grown significantly in the past few years."
International studies estimate that by 2023, the size of Egypt’s fiber optic market will grow to 9 billion U.S. dollars, which means that foreign investors in Egypt will have a huge opportunity, Nofal said.
According to reports, the project will invest 30 million U.S. dollars, and plans to export the products to other African markets before the middle of 2019 as the factory's production capacity increases.
“We are planning to double production in the next two years,”Tawfiq added, adding that the main goal of the plant is to create the “core”, which is the most difficult part of the process of manufacturing optical fiber and requires a highly advanced technology.
Qian Jianlin, Executive Chairman of the Chinese investment company Hengtong Group, said, “We have noticed that in the past few years, multi-mode technology that allows simultaneous propagation of multiple light modes has increased the transmission rate of audio and video applications and has become a global market. We are striving to make Egypt a major hub for expanding exports to the African market, which is the fastest growing market in the field of optical fiber."
Qian Jianlin added that the plant can produce 8000 kilometers of optical cables each year, and will double its production by the end of 2018.
At the same time, Yasser al-Qady, Minister of Communications and Information Technology of Egypt, praised the importance of the plant to the North African countries that are transforming into a digital society.
Egypt has been building 16 new cities with a total area of four times the capital Cairo. The minister added that fiber-optic cables are essential for building communications infrastructure in these cities. He said that the plant will become the African export center for fiber optic cables and eventually provide technology and communications services to Africa and the Middle East.
